believe it or not. I’m a big blogging loser.
Last night I had a few friends from church over for a game night. I invited some other church-type folk over, but they didn’t show. in fact I invited a bunch of people, and only 2 couples showed up. It was kind of nice though, except we didn’t have any games that all 7 of us could play. So the guys played something and the girls played a different game to start out. I broke out Cosmic Encounter. I hadn’t played Cosmic in forever. I only have the most recent AH version. So we played with the Aliens that are recommended in the rules. I had the Zombie, to my left Mike had Clone, and Nick had the Oracle. Since I had all my zombie armies I thought I was doing pretty well, ened up with my home planets unprotected and I lost my third home plate and consequently my zombie powers and the game ended fairly quickly after that. The clone held onto the 18 card for a long while, and I think the only reason that Nick didn’t win was because towards the he kept getting cards, but mediocre ones, if he could’ve refreshed his hand I think he would’ve won.
While the guys were playing Cosmic, the girls were playing Puerto Rico. Amy started with Indigo, and came in first place something like 52 to second place, was the 4th player with Corn and she had 45. I didn’t hear the end score. But 3 of them had played before and I explained the basic rules to the new player. Our game of Cosmic ended about the same time as Puerto Rico. Imagine that. It took us a while to get Cosmic going because it’d been a very long time since I played and neither of the other guys had played, we also took a break for ice cream and ice cream floats, as well to put the kids to bed.
After we wrapped our games, Amy and Caroline and I played Settlers while Tory and Mike and Nick played a nother game of
Cosmic, switching up the aliens this time. They had to teach Tori how to play, but she caught on quick, but I don’t think she ever grasped the real impact of how to use her alien, I forget which one it was, but it was the one who got to keep all of the artifact cards. The ended fairly quickly and our Settlers game was probably the quickest game of Settlers I’ve ever played. I guess that happens as everyone becomes fimiliar with the game and can start actually thinking about strategy vs thinking about how to take your turn. Caroline kicked our butts, she had the longest road stretching from one side of the b oard to the other, maybe 10 roads. On her last turn she built a settlement, and played the University card for her last VP. At the begining of the game Amy and I were equi-distant from the sheep port with two sheep tiles along the way, we raced for that port with Amy getting it before me, that essentially locked Amy and I out of beating Caroline.
Neither of the pictures in this entry were last night, they’re from our last game night. We had like 12 folks there, but got started kind of late.
I love game nights. I’m not concerned if I win or lose, i just enjoy the company, and sharing conversation and food. I’ve got two more game nights scheduled. If you’re interested in joining us, remember most of us are church-folk, let me know. I’ll get you directions
